Keeping your VW Campervan in Top Condition

Here’s a scenario to think about… It’s time for your holiday. You’ve worked hard all year for a few weeks of freedom on the open road. The camper is packed and you’re ready to go and a few miles in BANG, a breakdown. It’s only natural that breakdowns will occur, it comes with the territory of life on the road, so whether you’re a full-time vanner or a weekender, it’s just part of the adventure.

Whilst you can’t avoid breakdowns, there are some simple and basic tips, tricks and safety checks you can adopt to make life on the road a lot less stressful and hassle-free. Better yet, you don’t need to be a full-time mechanic to complete them.

Is your VW Campervan Ready for the Road?

Campervans are designed to chomp up the miles over the course of their lifetime. Their purpose is to take you serene places and adventurous hotspots in comfort and style. Whether you head out in your campervan once or twice a year, or your camper is an extension of you as you’re in it that much – it is vitally important you keep on top of the maintenance and safety of your van.

Our first and probably most obvious tip for keeping your vehicle well maintained is to make sure it is regularly serviced. Depending on the age of your camper, we would recommend at least two services a year. One with its annual MOT and one around 6 months later. On top of that, we would advise a mechanical check every 2 months or so.

The checks listed above are tailored for mechanical minds and garages, however, there are some basic checks you can keep on top of such as…

An absolute must is to check your tyre’s treads and pressure before every journey. If you’ve been travelling up and down the country for months on end, you’re bound to have worn rubbers. Check your tyres to make you’re within the legal limit, look out for nails, cuts or bulges as well as checking your tyre pressure.

Engine Oil

Your engine’s oil levels are another important check before any big journey. If you think you’re topping your oil up frequently, you might want to take your campervan to a garage and have them take a look.

Engine Coolant

Make sure you stay on top of the temperature of your engine. Your engine’s coolant should be somewhere between the minimum and maximum levels.

Look out for blown bulbs and cracks or dirt on the lenses (and don’t forget the fog lights!). Your dashboard is full of warning lights alerting you to this, however, it’s still good practice to manually check them over.

Wipers and Windscreen Wash

Over time you’ll notice your wipes might start to smear dirt or water rather than get rid of it. If this is the case, it’s probably time to replace them. In addition to your wipers, you want to make sure you stay on top of your washer fluid. If you’ve got the room, you should pop an extra bottle of screen wash in your van just in case. The last thing you need is to run out on a long journey.

More Camping and Campervanning Tips from Denby Campervans

Sun’s Out, Denby’s Out

School’s out for summer! No this isn’t an Alice Cooper song but more of a guide to enjoying the summer with a Denby Campervan. Whether you’re heading abroad or staying on the British Isles a VW Campervan is the perfect vehicle to take you there.

For those who have never considered a campervan holiday this quick read could be the inspiration you need to try campervanning for the first time, and rather a lot like our VW Campervans, you might end up being converted. Now you might think that getting a full family in the back of a camper might be a bit of a squeeze! or you’ll all go a bit stir crazy and on top of one another. Well, the truth is that simply isn’t the case, with careful packing, planning and our ergonomic designs (you’re welcome) you’ll be far from claustrophobic.

Campervans have come a long way from a simple mattress in the back. They’re packed full of features making camping and driving stress-free. Take a look at our guide to summer in a Denby Campervan.

Our Guide to Summer in a Denby Campervan

Planning is Key

Don’t get me wrong, planning every aspect of your trip is ludicrous, as you can hit bumps along the way that can disrupt your plans. However, striking a balance between a go with the flow attitude and a bit forward planning just leads to an enjoyable summer.

Campervanning is all about exploring, however during the summer chances are campsites will be busier than any other time of the year. So tipping up and expecting a spot to be vacant is a dangerous game. A little route planning and pre-booking can be a big stress reliever and time saver.

Not only that, driving around aimlessly looking for a place to stay or even something to do for the day can take its toll on the mood of the party. We’re all human and long journeys can affect us all, no more so than children. If you plan and organise your trip well, you can do most of the driving when they’re having a nap. Win, Win!

Travelling with Children

Continuing on from the previous point, travelling with your children is a truly rewarding experience. You can open their eyes to new adventures, cultures and so much more. However, we hate to be the one to break it too you, but it can be difficult – although it doesn’t have to be!

Following a few simple parenting hacks, you’ll keep your children entertained and engaged for the whole summer. Our first tip is to pack an entertainment bundle. Although camping is about escaping the modern comforts of home, this doesn’t mean you have to completely cut yourself off from the digital world. Pack plenty of books, board games, magazines, tablet devices (with chargers). Even if you don’t end up using them for most of your holiday, they’re good to get out on rainy days or quiet days.

Another top tip is to plan where you’re staying! If the campsite doesn’t have any child-friendly amenities or it is a long drive to a point of interest – it will be difficult to turn that frown upside down. Plus, you’ll be wasting valuable family time driving to and from places.

Pack the Essentials

It’s easy to get carried away when packing, we’ve all done it. Space is limited and those extra pair of trainers or your second denim jacket chips away at your space – and you could sacrifice something important.

Your campervan is your home for the duration of your holiday, and it can only hold so much. Always consider is there a smaller or lighter version when packing. ‘What to pack’ will be determined by the length or destination of your trip – but a quick tip is to write down everything you’ll think you’ll need. Review it. Then ask yourself ‘do I need it?’ You’ll save yourself so much space and time.

Speak to Denby or Take a Look at our Blog for Further Tips

The common theme in our guide is planning makes your summer holiday stress-free and I can’t stress that enough. But the most important tip we can give is to make it a summer to remember. Campervan holidays bring so much joy to families and we believe everyone to experience it, although we might be a bit biased.

If you’d like more tips about how to enjoy your campervan or if you’d like to take a look inside one of our VW CampervansSpeak to the team at Denby Campervans today. We have a tone of experience and a portfolio of happy customers! who have set off for family adventures in a campervan.

Volkswagen Campervan & Kids: A Perfect Summer

Camping has always been a huge part of my life growing up! Most school holidays we’d pack the car and go camping for the week or a weekend. Come rain or shine we’d head out into the outdoors, sitting, chatting and enjoying our time under the stars!

I have always enjoyed camping and now I get the opportunity, as my mum and dad with me to take the kids. Although we camped in a tent – nowadays the family loves piling into our Volkswagen campervan. A great runner, reliable and comfortable our camper eats up the miles on the motorway, but its not all plain sailing.

The first and probably the most common question we get asked is: “how do you all fit?” and I won’t lie it can be tough, but with planning and years of experience, it’s a piece of cake.

So here is an insight into the camping adventures we go on in our Volkswagen campervan and our guide to campervanning with kids to keep them entertained and ready for the great outdoors. As we want you can experience the same thrill we get when we head out with the kids.

How to get the Best out of your Volkswagen Campervan

Campervanning with the kids sounds idyllic but it requires a lot of planning before you set off. Everyone always talks about the scenic views and wonderful places you visit. However, there are a lot of dull motorways and traffic jams in between.

There’s so much to love about camping in a Volkswagen Campervan with the kids. So here are a few tips we’ve learnt along the way to keep spirits and morale high on the road.

It comes to no surprise that space in our Volkswagen campervan can be tight, but it all depends on how clever you are when you’re packing. A long trip with a full camper can be tricky so, minimal packing is key! I’m guilty of overpacking and I’ve made that mistake so take it from me you don’t need 4 pairs of shoes.

Some of the clothes you pack will depend on where you’re going but it’s safe to say if you’re camping in the UK, you’ll need waterproofs and all-weather clothing! So, assuming you are camping in the UK, the essentials are; a raincoat or all-weather clothing, wellies, walking boots, shorts, jeans and a warm jumper.

Another tip is to pack a washing line and washing tablets – and we take every opportunity to do a bit of laundry.

Plan where you’re going to Stay

There are hundreds of campsites across the UK and Europe with fun activities for kids and they are key for a pleasant trip. If there isn’t anything for the kids to do in and around the campsite it can be difficult to keep a smile on their faces. Amenities such as a swimming pool, parks, games rooms, sports facilities are not only fun for you and the kids but a great chance for them to make friends.

Know the Area

Camping is all about exploring new places and getting out and about on foot. If you need to drive 30 minutes or so to the nearest attraction it defeats the point a little. Not only that if you’ve spent time setting up your little campsite as your home from home, with lights, awning, pop up table etc and then have to pack it all away every time you head out, but you’re also wasting valuable holiday time.

This jumps on the previous point but a little bit of prior planning and researching the campsite and the local area means you’ll know all the nearest spots for a coffee, ice cream, activities, attractions and more without tearing down your camp.

Keeping the Kids Entertained

As much as camping is a perfect opportunity to break away from technology, that doesn’t mean you have to go completely off the grid. Kids are still kids at the end of the day and a little bit of technology in the downtime doesn’t hurt. We like to pack an ‘entertainment box’, which we like to fill with games, books, toys and so on. If the weather takes a turn and you’re stuck in your campervan a bit of tech can be a lifesaver.

Must pack Items

As we’ve mentioned space is limited in a Volkswagen campervan and clever packing is pivotal. One thing we learnt on the road is to pack pop up tent. You’re probably wondering why we need a tent in a campervan?

A pop-up tent is a perfect home for bulky items that to de-clutter the van when you’re parked up. Items such as car seats, pushchairs, bikes/ scooters, foldable chairs, sports gear, dirty washing, muddy wellies or wet clothes can all be safely stored inside the tent.

Enjoy yourself

The best tip we can give is, make it fun, enjoyable and memorable. Start by limiting your journey times. Short journeys make it less stressful for the driver and the kids appreciate smaller journeys.

Secondly, make it flexible. Home life is often a routine with set bedtimes, mealtimes or curfews. Camping is all about being flexible, fun and embracing the freedom of the great outdoors. We’re not saying you should abandon all the rules and turn camping into a Lord of the Flies’ experience, but a couple of late nights under the stars isn’t the end of the world.

You’re on holiday and you’re out to make memories so make the most out of your valuable time with your family – and let a Volkswagen campervan be the vehicle to help!

Why We Love VW Campervans at Denby Campervans

VW Campervans are our life! We love these versatile, functional and stylish vehicles as they offer so many benefits to budding travellers and adventurers. The beauty of a campervan is that you can make it your own. You decide the make, model, colour, fittings, accessories and more. Not only that – you pick the destination. Campervans can take you to beaches, forests, mountains cities or towns. Whatever and wherever you want to go, they’ll get you there.

Just a few of Many Reasons we LOVE VW Campervans

Each of us has our own reasons for adoring these amazing vehicles, we’ve asked around and here are our top answers to ‘why do you love campervans?’

Freedom and spontaneity

Possibly the number one answer for most people but campervans are the ultimate tools in going wherever and whenever you want to go. Pick a place, pack your bags and off you go. It’s as simple as that.

Day trips

Tying in with point one, but a campervan is perfect for packing up and heading out for the day. Whether it’s the seaside, hills or parks. You can be out there enjoying an adventure for the day in moments.

No more hotel nightmares

We’ve all been there, spending hours looking for review sites of hotels wondering what it will be like when you arrive. Your campervan is both a hotel and transport rolled into one – so you’re in no doubt about the quality of your accommodation.

Comfort and convenient

Camping is freedom of the great outdoors at its absolute best, but tents aren’t for everybody. Personally, we prefer not to wrestle with a ground sheet or tent in unpredictable weather conditions. We much prefer to arrive, park up and make the bed in no more 15minutes. It’s a no brainer really. Not only that but a double rock and roll bed over a thin foamy sleeping matt. I know which I’d pick.

Doors open cooker on

One of my personal favourite aspects of a campervan is the idea of parking up somewhere scenic and enjoying delicious home cooked meal – immersed in your surroundings. The washing up I don’t enjoy as much.

Solo, duo, family

Campervan adventures can be enjoyed whether flying solo, a partner or with the kids. Not to show my age, but kids these days are stuck to their gadgets and gizmos. Campervans are a great chance to break away from the glowing screens and enjoy quality time outdoors and with family.

VW Campervans are Just Cool… End of

VW Campervans are just cool and that’s a fact, the original VW T1 is arguably one of the most iconic and coolest vehicles going (we might be a little bias there). The shape may have changed over the years, but the badge and values remain the same.

At Denby Campervans, we specialise the sale of new and used VW campervans, particularly the stylish VW T6 model and the equally impressive VW T5. Based in Leek, Staffordshire, we’ve been helping customers for many years to find the perfect vehicle to take them on the adventures and road trips they’ve always dreamed of.

Our Denby campervans are built with an eye for detail, quality materials, expert craftsmanship, but most importantly, with you in mind. Our aim is to make your VW campervan unique to your requirements and specifications. Whether you’re a thrill-seeking adventurer or looking for something understated – speak to Denby Campervans today. And we’ll work together to great the perfect campervan.

Volkswagen Campervan Cooking: What you’ll need to Know!

Sitting down for a well-earned meal after a day driving or exploring is one of the many perks of campervanning. There’s something just so satisfying about homemade cooking at your stop – opening the doors and windows and taking in the views. Meal times are a great chance to swapping stories, plan your next stop and enjoy each other’s company.

To some, when they think of campsite cooking, their first thought is of the painful memories of the scouts or guides eating beans from a tin, or bland stew. So, we’re here to tell you that just isn’t true. With a Denby Volkswagen Campervan, you’ll get a fully equipped kitchen and eating area – so you can enjoy your mealtime in luxurious comfort and style.

We love campervan cooking, and we want to share a few tips and tricks from our time on the road. That we hope will help you with your cooking!

Volkswagen Campervan Cooking: Our Tips

At Denby, we specialise in campervans and campervan conversions. Cooking is a big part of the camping experience. So, we have put together a helpful guide to cooking and living in a Volkswagen campervan.

Shop Sensibly

When we say sensibly it has multilayers. To start, stock up on non-perishable items with long shelf lives, these will last you the entire journey and are great for a midtrip snack or meal.

Secondly, supermarkets are much cheaper than a corner shop, so take full advantage of their savings and multipacks. You’ll pick up fresh food at a good price meaning it’s a win-win on both savings and taste. Although don’t overstock and get carried away – we’ve all done it.

Store Food Properly

Once you’re stocked up with food, be mindful of how your store it. The last thing you want is ants or worse mice. Tupperware is your best friend for items such as cereal, rice, pasta and so on. These magical food storage boxes will not only keep pests away, but they’ll also keep your food fresh and easier to store/stack.

Clean Up ASAP

This could be one of the most useful tips we could give, but don’t leave your dishes dirty. Washing up is by far and away from the most irritating part of cooking and it is so easy to just say I’ll do it tomorrow – but trust us you’ll regret it.

Water is limited so you need to be smart with the washing up. When the pan is still hot, add water and washing up liquid immediately, sparing minimal effort to clean up. This could save you hours excess scrubbing and water when your food has hardened.

For example, porridge turns to cement when left too long and you’ll spend water and energy scrubbing.

An extra tip which ties in with cleaning up is – be mindful what you put down the sink. The odd bit of veg or egg is nothing to worry about, but large chunks will not only clog the drains but stink out the van. Our tip: buy a basin.

You Cook Where you Sleep

This is one we learnt the hard way but now we can pass it on to other campers so that you don’t make the same mistake. Think before cooking in a campervan, a curry is a nice smell to wake up to… salmon not so much.

Smells cling to the furnishing and upholstery! So, be aware if you make a smelly meal, it may be in the van for a few days.

Remember you are Part of a Community

Camping is a shared experience with you and other holidaymakers. If your holiday is coming to an end or you’re packing up for a long journey and you’ve got perishables such as meat, veg or cheese that won’t last the trip. Offer them out to campers in the area – and hopefully, somewhere down the road, you’ll be repaid in kind.

Our Top Tips for Camping with a VW Transporter Campervan

Campervanning can have its drawbacks, most notably the weather. The stories of holidaymakers camping trips being good or bad tend to hinder on the weather. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about that! However, we can help by providing you with a few tips and advice, that we hope will make your holiday as smooth and as stress-free as possible.

  1. Go for quality over quantity when packing.

Confession, I don’t follow this tip, but I wish I did! I can’t count the number of times I’ve packed something stating, ‘I’ll take it just in case’. But the more you bring the harder you’ll find space to store it. Despite the vast storage the VW Transporter campervan has to offer. If you overpack, your camper will feel cluttered and cramped. Only pack what you’ll need, and your van will feel spacious and comfy.

  1. Leave the suitcases behind.

This follows on from point one, we advise leaving suitcases or packing boxes behind. The VW Transporter has cupboards draws and storage perfect you everything you’ll need when on the road and camping. Clothes can be packed into small spaces whereas suitcases can take up too much space.

  1. Layers are key.

The weather can be unpredictable, sunny morning can quickly turn into a downpour in the afternoon. Even if it is a ‘summer’ holiday you’re going on, a hat, coat and some thick woolly socks are essential.

  1. Plan, plan, plan

Whether it’s the destination, where to stay, the day’s activity or what/ where to eat – plan ahead! Having even a rough idea of your plans means less time is wasted and you get the most out of your trip.

  1. Sleep & relax in comfort

Good sleep is essential for your trip success. Luckily VW Transporter campervan beds are comfy, spacious and warm. With proper bedding, they’re as good as your bed at home. Easy to set up and put away, if you’ve had a long day travelling, you’ll be off to sleep in a matter of moments.

New Showroom, New Website & New Campervans

It’s been a busy few months for Denby Campervans! which might explain why we’ve not had the chance to update our blog. With so much going on we thought we’d bring you a roundup of all the exciting things going on at Denby.

Our New Campervan Showroom

At the end of 2018, we made the move from our original showroom to a brand-new complex in Leek, Staffordshire. Staying true to our Staffordshire roots we’re still based right on the edge of the Peak District. So, our Campervans are still built with the customer and adventure and a sense of wonder in mind. Our bigger premises have allowed us to increase our range of campers and as a result, our customers have a wider choice. But as always if there is something you can’t find on our website or showroom, we’ll be happy to try and source the vehicle for you.
