4 Reasons To Take A Campervan Staycation in 2020

It seems that summer 2020 isn’t totally lost! According to the UK government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy, from 4th July campsites and caravan parks will be allowed to open. While the same can’t be said for Scotland and Wales just yet (Scotland has set an indicative date of 15th July for the reopening of tourism and hospitality businesses and there is no proposed date in Wales yet), it’s safe to say that the possibility of some kind of summer holiday this year is within reach.

And we couldn’t be happier about it! Which is why, in this article we’re going to look at 6 reasons why a campervan staycation could be just the thing to kickstart your summer 2020 plans. Read on!

Reasons To Take A Campervan Staycation This Summer

Admittedly, we don’t quite yet know what the conditions will be on the reopening of caravan parks and camping sites. Presumably social distancing will be in force and there may be restrictions on facilities. But there’s no doubt that a reopening of these spaces even to a small degree will be fantastic not only for families and UK holiday makers but the tourism industry too.

You Have Everything You Need

With a campervan, you have everything you need in one place. From a place to sleep to a place to cook, campervan conversions are the perfect choice for a no fuss family holiday. Even better, with your own kitchen and bedrooms there’s no need to spend any more time than you need to in crowded public spaces, or queuing unnecessarily. Instead, everything is at your fingertips and you are free to enjoy the great outdoors as much as you like.

You Can Support Local Tourism

Taking a holiday is the number one form of escapism. We break away from our routines and take off to a far flung place to forget about work and the daily grind. But have you ever really explored the opportunities for holidaying on or near your doorstep?

Of course, we don’t mean camping overnight on your driveway – although that can always feel like a great adventure for kids. We’re talking about areas nearby that you haven’t yet explored, such as campsites, green spaces, walks and visitor attractions.

We can guarantee that there’s probably more than you think within a stone’s throw of your home. And with a campervan you can hop in at a moment’s notice and head off to explore, no planning ahead or navigating the crowds necessary!

You Can Explore New Areas

If you have always taken your holidays abroad, then you’re missing out on the gorgeous locations we have right here in the UK. Even better, with a campervan you can change up your route at the drop of a hat, take a detour, or just go off grid for a few weeks on a magical mystery tour.

Taking a staycation in the campervan gives you the freedom to truly explore. As long as you have food in the fridge, some warm clothes and a smile on your face, you have everything you need to dive headfirst into the unknown and discover somewhere totally new. What are you waiting for?

You Can Be Totally Flexible

No waiting around at the airport. No lost luggage. No delayed flights. No disappointments.

A campervan offers a totally flexible holiday – whenever you want it. What’s more, following your initial investment, it’s always ready and waiting ready to go. Whether you’re a lone wolf who enjoys the solitude of the great outdoors or an energetic family looking for your next thrill, a campervan offers endless adventure at the drop of a hat.

Choosing A Base Van For Campervan Conversions

Our Top Tips On Choosing A Base Van For A Campervan Conversion

If you’re considering a campervan conversion, the first step is to decide on a base van. And there’s a huge amount to consider including brand, model, weight, fuel type, specifications, and of course price!

Tips For Choosing A Campervan Base

There are a number of vehicles available at the moment which are well suited to a campervan conversion. To help you to choose which is right for you, we’ve put together some top tips including key things to consider in your search for the perfect base van.

Size Matters

Of course, first and foremost it’s important to settle on a van that will comfortably fit both you and anyone else you’ll want to take on your travels. The size of your family (or possibly friendship group) will ultimately whittle down your choice of base vans, so take some time to consider this.

As well as this, think about how long your average trip will be. Short breaks and long weekends don’t require huge amounts of storage. While extended trips may require more space for keeping those essentials close while you’re on the road.

Ultimately, the size of the vehicle you choose for your campervan conversion will come down to your expectations, requirements and the size of the party you’re most likely to travel with.

Age Before Beauty

Yes, a campervan that looks the part is fantastic. But if you’re looking for a campervan conversion that will go the distance, think carefully on both the age and mileage of the vehicle. An older vehicle doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be more prone to breakdown and in need of more repairs, however it is a factor to consider.

If you’re looking for a vehicle with character, classic VW campervans are very popular. Due to their popularity, it’s not too difficult to get hold of spare parts. However, if you’d like the character of a VW without the uncertainty of constant breakdown, the newer Transporter models are very recognisable and reliable.

Prioritise Your Priorities

At the end of the day, a campervan conversion should be made for you. Therefore, your base vehicle should be able to accommodate all of (or at least most of) the things that you would like. So, when it comes to picking the right base for your conversion, first prioritise your priorities. Is a separate toilet/shower room important to you? Do you need lots of storage? Will you be travelling with your kids?

Take some time to write down a list of your top priorities and ask questions about the vans you look at. Some of them might be totally unsuitable for the things that you want or need, which will pretty quickly knock down your long list into a short list.

Thrash Out Your Budget

Finally, thrash out your budget. Work out how much you are prepared to spend on your base van and conversion, and work from there. Like anything else it’s very easy to get carried away when you start shopping around. But there’s nothing so disheartening as being bought back to Earth sharply when you realise everything you’ve dreamed of falls way out of budget.

For this reason, set a budget. If you’d like flexibility, think about the highest amount you’d be prepared to spend and then consider what boxes a van would have to tick to warrant spending that amount. That way, if you come across a van that perfectly suits your needs you’ll be able to work out quickly whether it falls into budget and whether you can get the ball rolling on purchasing it.

VW Transporter Campervan Conversion

4 Reasons To Choose A VW Transporter Campervan Conversion

If you’re reading this, you know that here at Denby, campervan conversions are our thing. We eat, sleep and breathe all things van life. And we love breathing new life into a van by creating stunning bespoke conversions designed for exploring and adventure.

One of the most iconic types of conversions that we create for customers are VW conversions. From the Balmoral to the Buckingham and the Denby Weekender, we offer a wide range of customisable campervan conversion packages to suit your needs. To see them in action, check out our gallery of campervan conversions.

In our line of work, we work on a lot of VW Transporters. And in this blog, we’re going to give you a run-down of the reasons why you should choose a VW Transporter campervan conversion.

The Benefits Of A VW Transporter

VW Transporters are one of the most recognisable and most commonly seen types of campervan out there. And for good reason too! They come with a whole host of benefits that make them well suited to a conversion, and living the van life.

Unrivalled Quality

The first reason why you should choose a VW Transporter campervan conversion is because of the build quality. If your main goal for purchasing a campervan is to head out and about, go exploring and make happy memories with your family, then the VW Transporter comfortably fit the bill.

VW T6 Campervan Conversion With Elevating Roof

Put simply, VW Transporters are made to last. They are sturdy and reliable with high standards of safety built in at every turn. This means that when you make the decision to hit the open road and head off on your next journey, you can do so with the peace of mind that the vehicle you have chosen won’t let you down.

Fantastic Driving Experience

Every new Transporter that hits the market is jam-packed with the latest technology. For example, the new T6.1 Transporter boasts a whole host of high tech features designed to deliver a driving experience that is second to none. This includes safety features such as Sidewind Assist and electromechanical steering, as well as built in DAB+ radios with 6.5” touchscreen.

Candy White T6 Transporter With Elevating Roof

VW Transporters are designed to make driving a pleasurable experience, which is exactly what you want when considering a campervan conversion. After all, you’re going to be spending a lot of time on the open road, why not choose a vehicle that makes getting behind the wheel a joy rather than a means to an end?

Flexibility In Conversion

Purpose built campervans are great, but they’re not made with you in mind. With a VW Transporter campervan conversion, you are the master of how it looks and how it is finished. Rather than put up and shut up with aspects of a ready-made campervan or motorhome, you have complete control of optional extras, upholstery finishes, worktops and more.

Rib Bed Upholstery Upgrade

With a bespoke Transporter conversion you get full flexibility in conversion without compromise.

They Look Fantastic

As we said, the VW Transporters is iconic and is guaranteed to catch the eye of any campervan enthusiast. One of the most recognisable vehicles on the road, Transporters are available in a huge range of colours and finishes, from bright and vibrant red or yellow to more understated (but still great looking) grey and black.

Reflex Silver VW T6 Transporter Campervan

If how you look out on the road and at camp sites is a top priority for you, plumping for a shiny, colourful VW Transporter is a fantastic option. What’s more, your interior can be customised to suit the exterior for an overall finish that looks great and functions fantastically.

Campervan Storage Hacks

5 Campervan Storage Hacks To Try

Minimalism seems to be a trend that never goes out of style. And the ‘van life’ style lends itself well to it. There’s nothing more freeing than leaving the grind behind, taking only what you need and hitting the road- whether it’s for a day, week, month, year or lifetime!

That being said, there are some things we do need to take along with us for the ride. And no one likes to feel overwhelmed by clutter. But a clever solution to this is clever campervan storage hacks that will not only save space but ensure you have everything you need to hand when you’re out and about.

Campervan Storage Hacks

If you’re looking for ways to live a more streamlined van life, then check out these 5 campervan storage hacks. Then give them a try yourself!

First Of All – Declutter!

First things first, if you’re looking to maximise the space in your van then start with a declutter. If you’ve been travelling in your campervan for a while, it’s inevitable that you’ve built up more than a few things you don’t use or need. So have a look around and identify any items that you don’t need.

Some items may be obvious, of course. While others may need a bit more consideration. For example, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans, towels, even bottles of shampoo can take up huge amounts of space. To effectively cut down, think about how many of these things you actually need – you’ll probably surprise yourself with what you can afford to take away and be amazed by the space it frees up.

Worst case scenario when you declutter is that you realise you’ve left behind something you could probably use in the future. No problem! Just add it back in again when you get home. Most likely, though, you’ll see that you probably don’t need as much as you do have, which presents real opportunities to cut down on clutter.

Look Up

Not just the roof but also on the undersides of shelves and cupboards. These areas aren’t often used, however with a bit of creative thinking they can make secure homes for many things. For example, if you’re keen campervan cook, then screwing the lids of your spice jars to the underside of shelving can make them accessible and less prone to moving about during transit.

What’s more, it looks fantastic too and keeps them from taking up valuable space on the worktops – especially if you reach for them often!

Consider Storage Containers

When you’re living the van life, storage containers are your friends. Handy, versatile and cheap they can be used almost anywhere and hidden away easily for a clutter free space. Hook on storage has become very popular recently because it’s so versatile, from bringing your very own herb garden with you on the road to a handy place to store your keys when not in use, hanging storage can be used for all sorts and is very quick and easy to install.

Hello Hooks!

Coats and bags can often needlessly take up huge amounts of space. But being an essential on the road there’s no way you can simply leave them at home. Hooks are a great way to give you a dedicated space to leave your coat and bag when you return to your campervan, and they can be used almost anywhere, including on the backs of doors.

Netting can also be used on the ceiling as a place for bags and coats, leaving ample space for you to kick back and relax.

Pop It Real Good

This one is more of a permanent fixture, but a good one nonetheless. An elevating roof is a great way of giving yourself some extra head room. Pop top roofs can also be used as a sleeping space, which is fantastic for kids as they can get the full camping experience from the comfort and safety of the van. Oh, and it gets them from under your feet too!

Clever Conversions

A clever campervan conversion can make all the difference when it comes to space saving hacks in your campervan. Our Balmoral conversion, for example, comes with a vast array of clever storage options from side kitchen units, a wardrobe (complete with hanging rail) with Tambour Space Saving doors, an elevating roof, roof bed, or high top roof, under water tank and a built in Fridge/Freezer.

With all the basics in place, you can easily find a space for everything and use clever storage hacks to create a spacious, enjoyable interior that you can’t get enough of. See how our customers are making the most out of their campervans over at our Customer Gallery.

4 Reasons Why You Should Buy A Campervan in 2020

4 Reasons Why You Should Buy a Campervan in 2020

Campervans are enjoying a rise in popularity of late. Why? Perhaps it’s because we are becoming more conscious of the impact travelling abroad has on the environment. Or maybe the nomad lifestyle appeals more to those among us that are striving to achieve a better work-life balance? Whatever the reason, van life is increasingly enticing individuals, couples and families alike.

Here at Denby, we love campervans and the van lifestyle for many reasons. The main being that jumping in a campervan and hitting the road opens up a whole world of possibilities beyond that of a simple package holiday. If you’re considering giving the van lifestyle a go this year, we’ve compiled our top 4 reasons why you should buy a campervan in 2020 to give you that final nudge.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go

If you often find yourself with itchy feet and chomping at the bit to explore new places, a campervan gives you the freedom to do just that. With a van, you don’t have to worry about spending a gazillion pounds on upgrading your luggage allowance in order to pack more than a pair of flip flops and a towel. You’re ready and raring to go at the drop of a hat.

Oh, The Places You'll Go

Fancy a trip to the Lake District at the weekend? How about climbing Snowdon? Hop in the van and off you go. No in-depth planning, no overspending on flights, transport and hotel rooms. Just the freedom to do whatever you please, whenever you please.

For more van life inspiration, check out our Denby Customers Gallery!

Travel In Style

With a campervan conversion the world really is your oyster when it comes to mod cons, upholstery and decor. Not many of us can say we get the opportunity to travel First or Business Class when we fly, but in a campervan you will travel in style all day, every day if you like.

For example, our iconic Balmoral conversion comes complete with all the luxuries you could need (and a few optional extras, too), including a Rock & Roll bed, side kitchen units and wardrobe, gas hob and sink, and fridge/freezer. The Balmoral conversion also comes kitted out with USB power points, so you can charge your phone or tablet on the go and enjoy in-flight entertainment at your fingertips!

Balmoral Campervan Conversion

Keeping It In The Family

Taking off for the weekend usually involves cramming the kids and the dogs into the car, along with the tent and all your home comforts. We’ve all been there, and it’s no fun! With a campervan, heading off on family escapes is easier and more spacious. What’s more, you don’t have to wrestle with the tent when you get to your destination. Just pitch up, sit back, and enjoy a brew before heading off to explore the local area!

Switch Off From The Everyday

Family Campervan Holidays

Life is more hectic than ever right now. Many of us work long, unforgiving hours. And technology means we never really get to switch up. One of the best things about living the van life is being able to up sticks, switch off your phone, and get some much-needed rest and relaxation. Recent studies have shown the spending time outdoors is hugely positive for our mental health. With a campervan, you’re never far from a bit of fresh air, a long walk, and a pub lunch to round it all off if you really want to treat yourself.

New Volkswagen T6.1 Transporter Campervan Conversions From Denby

The new Volkswagen T6.1 Transporter has arrived. An improved version of the T6 (if the .1 of the name isn’t a giveaway), it’s clear at first glance that this panel van has had a facelift. Boasting a new front grille and bumper, the headlights have also undergone improvement as they now merge with the crossbar across the grille.

Beyond the exterior, there are other changes to be found within the new T6.1. The vehicle now features electromechanical steering, similar to that used in the Volkswagen Crafter. The benefits of this are that extra features, such as lane-keeping assistance and crosswind assistance can now be added for a smoother, safer ride.

As for everything else, well you most likely know it all by now. Just like its predecessor, the T6.1 is available in short and long-wheelbase models, with standard, medium and high roof heights to choose from. While electric e-Transporter and Sportline versions are in the pipeline, those keen to get their hands on the new model have two trim levels to choose from at present: Startline and Highline.

First Look At The Interior

So, now you’ve got the lowdown on the exterior – what about the interior? Well, it doesn’t disappoint. Finished in ultra-modern style, you’ll find all the latest technological features you’d expect from a modern vehicle. Front and centre of the interior is the 8inch touchscreen infotainment system kitted out with a voice control system optimised to respond to natural speech. Upgrade options also include inductive charging for your smartphone and the ability to connect to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Campervan Classifications & Reclassification

Camper Van Conversions & Reclassification: What You Need To Know

As many of us know, in October the DVLA released a new motor caravan checklist. This list details 4 categories a converted vehicle must meet to be recognised as a motor caravan, as well as the external permanent features for a change to the body type.

Amendments for body type change to ‘Motorcaravan’

In October 2019, the DVLA introduced new, additional requirements for body type changes to ‘Motorcaravan’. At the heart of this, the requirements were added to ensure that vehicles on the road can be distinguished within traffic.

Campervan Conversion External Requirements

The DVLA will expect to see certain external features which are commonly seen in motor caravans. These include:

  • Motorcaravan style graphics on both sides of the vehicle
  • An awning bar attached to either side of the vehicle
  • A high top roof (this does not include a pop-top elevating roof)

That being said, if your preference is to include an elevating roof, please do not worry. Your camper can still be classed under the campervan insurance policy. Motorhome/campervan insurance specialists will class our conversions under the campervan policy, regardless of roof type.

Please also be aware that Motorhome/Campervan insurance specialists may not be listed across price comparison sites for vehicle (campervan) insurance. At Denby, upon purchase of your new campervan, we can provide you with our recommended list should you require it.

Campervan Conversions: The Volkswagen T6.1 Transporter

Have you heard the news? Of course you have! The Volkswagen Transporter T6 has had an upgrade in the form of the cutting-edge Caravelle T6.1. Revealed at the world-famous Geneva International Motor Show in March this year, it joins a line-up of iconic Transporter vehicles. And it is sure to be a winner in the campervan community! And you can read all about here. What’s more, you can find out all about campervan conversions for this new model here at Denby too!

What’s New?

Starting with the outside, the chassis of the T6.1 boasts a redesign that brings it firmly into the 21st Century. From high-intensity H7 headlights and brand spanking new rear LED lights. The stunningly futuristic front end is hard to miss when you’re out and about. And the new-look alloy wheels go a long way to complement the stylish interior.

Speaking of the interior, the Caravelle T6.1 is made for driving. Featuring a digital dashboard, infotainment system, and online connectivity (thanks to the integrated SIM card), drivers will also enjoy a veritable feast of driver assistance systems to keep them firmly on the road. This includes Cross Wind Assist, Lane Assist and Park Assist. The latter of which steers automatically for you. Leaving you in charge of the pedals and focused on the task in hand!

In fact, safety is paramount in this vehicle. The integrated eSim, in the event of an accident, will automatically send the location of the van to an emergency response centre. And, if the driver doesn’t respond, will inform the emergency services. Full internet connectivity within the vehicle also gives drivers access to music streaming and internet radio, for a myriad of entertainment options while you’re on the road!

What’s Under The Hood?

As well as improved comfort and connectivity, the T6.1 also features a redesigned cab with 230V power, even more lockable storage and an under-seat load function. Under the hood, you’ll find a reworked engine with a range of options available to buyers. The front wheel version of the T6.1 boasts a super efficient 2.0L turbodiesel engine, which is compliant with the Euro-6d-TEMP-EVAP emissions standard. Buyers can also choose from engine and gearbox combinations, including a DSG dual clutch gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
